Raw Water Intake Improvements
The purpose of the Raw Water Intake Improvement project was to replace an existing raw water intake for the City of Lenoir’s Water Treatment Plant. The plant is permitted by the North Carolina Division of Environmental Health, Public Water Supply Section (NCDEHPWSS) to withdraw and treat up to 12 MGD. The new raw water intake has been designed to withdraw 18 MGD from Lake Rhodhiss. Although the water treatment plant itself will not be able to treat that amount until future improvements to the water treatment plant have been completed and approved by NCDEHPWSS, the new raw water intake provides for that future improvement.
The construction of the intake consists of two (2) passive intake screens; two (2) 36-inch diameter intake pipes; a 45-ft deep wet well, and raw water pump station.
Grant funding for this project included grants from the Golden Leaf foundation and the NC Rural Center.
