Controlled burn on Sunset Street

The City of Lenoir Fire Department will perform a controlled burn at 213 Sunset St. tomorrow, June 24, 2020. Residents will see smoke in the area.

The house located at 213 Sunset St. caught fire a couple years ago and has been vacant since. Recently, the property owner asked if the City’s firefighters would use the structure for training purposes. The burn will allow the City’s firefighters to get some training and will help the property owner with demolition.

City of Lenoir Firefighters have already performed ventilation training in the building. Tomorrow, some of the younger staff will get hands-on training in fire hose placement, maneuvers, lays, and proper application of water on live fires. Controlled burns allow staff to do training in a controlled atmosphere.

"We plan to have approximately 12 to 15 firefighters at the training," Fire Chief Ken Hair said. "Department staff has went door-to-door to the adjacent neighbors advising them of the anticipated burn."

The property owner will be responsible for cleaning up the debris from the controlled burn.
