Turkey Tuesday is next week at the MLK Jr. Center

Councilmembers Ike Perkins and Crissy Thomas show off the turkeys bought for Turkey Tuesday.

The 6th Annual Community Turkey Tuesday is next week at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Lenoir. City Councilmembers Crissy Thomas and Rev. Ike Perkins are still taking donations for the event, and there is a slight change to the start time.

This year, Turkey Tuesday will be held Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019. At 3:00 p.m., volunteers will give away the first 50 turkeys to seniors and people with special needs. The giveaway for the general public will start at 5:00 p.m.

Councilmember Perkins said the times were changed to get folks through a bit earlier in the day and to improve safety at the event.

"We got to keep in our minds 'safety'," Perkins said. "We don't want anyone to get hurt, or any accidents. That is one of the main reasons for changing the times, so we can accommodate everyone in a safe environment."

Councilmember Thomas said Turkey Tuesday is about inspiring the community to be in the spirit of giving and empowering people to find a way to help others in big or small ways.

"Thanksgiving represents a time to reflect on what you are thankful for, and in return be a blessing to others," Thomas said. "Turkey Tuesday is my way of giving to others because so much has been given to me."

Thomas said she and her volunteers hope to give away 300 to 400 turkeys this year.

"I hope this event will inspire others to find an avenue to volunteer and give back to others," Thomas said.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Center is located at 313 Greenhaven Dr NW, Lenoir.
